Who is Nick Boyle?

Nick is a specialist laparoscopic, upper gastro-Intestinal and reflux surgeon. His practice is based in London at the King Edward VII hospital in the Harley Street medical area and in Tunbridge Wells in Kent. He has one of the UK’s largest and most experienced practices in the treatment of benign gastro-oesophageal disease and is an internationally acclaimed reflux surgeon. He is an expert laparoscopic surgeon and also specialises in the treatment of hernias and gallstones.

He trained in general surgery and subsequently specialist surgery of the oesophagus and stomach at Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals in London and laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit in Guildford. He spent time in North America after being awarded a fellowship to study hernia surgery. He was awarded a Master of Surgery degree by The University of London for his research into blood flow in the stomach and gastro-intestinal tract and published numerous scientific papers based upon this work. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Nick was appointed consultant surgeon to Maidstone and Tunbridge in 2000 where he introduced complex minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to Kent and led the centralisation of gastro-oesophageal cancer surgery.

In 2017 he left the NHS after 30 years and now works in full time private practice. He has published widely and presents frequently at both national and international scientific meetings. He is currently Vice President of the European Foregut Society.

Nick is married to Gabrielle and they have four children. When not working he enjoys cooking, wine, travel and riding horses, competing at a very amateur level as a one day event rider.

Nick’s Expertise

Nick has become increasingly specialised over many years and his practice is now dedicated to three key areas

  • Benign pathology of the oesophagus and stomach including reflux disease
  • Abdominal wall and groin hernias
  • Gallstones

Nick has performed literally thousands of procedures, including over 3000 laparoscopic hernia repairs and gallbladder operations each. He performs open as well as totally extra-peritoneal (TEP) and Trans-abdominal pre-peritoneal laparoscopic procedures, tailoring the approach to each individual patient .

Over the last decade Nick has developed a particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of gastro-oesophageal functional symptoms and reflux disease. In 2015 he established RefluxUK and the first multi-disciplinary team dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with reflux. He has pioneered new surgical treatments for reflux. In 2012 he was one of the first surgeons in the UK to perform LINX TM sphincter augmentation surgery and has one of the largest experiences of the procedure in Europe. In 2022 he was the first surgeon in the UK to perform the RefluxStop TM procedure.
